This week’s New Music Friday has a little bit of everything, from diss tracks and TV theme songs to moshpit-ready rage rap and smooth ladies’ jams.
50 Cent has made a surprise return to the booth — not to lock horns with T.I., who has been peppering him with diss songs of late, but to soundtrack the upcoming Power prequel series. Featuring a soulful hook from from R&B hotshot Leon Thomas, “No One Told Us What We’re Here For” is proof that Fif still has the magic touch whenever he decides to fully recommit himself to music.
Speak of the devil, Tip is also in the mix this week with yet another defiant song aimed at 50 Cent. In response to Fif taunting him with a potential Surviving T.I. & Tiny documentary, the Grand Hustle honcho puts his family first on the triumphant “Trauma Bond” which contains light jabs like: “Integrity is priceless, that ain’t something that you can finance.”
Flying the flag for hip-hop’s current generation, Denzel Curry formally introduces his new supergroup The Scythe (A$AP Ferg, TiaCorine, Bktherula, Key Nyata and himself) with the crew’s super-charged debut album, while Gnarls Barkley — the Grammy-winning duo of CeeLo Green and Danger Mouse — return with Atlanta, their first album in 18 years.
Elsewhere, Meek Mill is firmly in his bag on the reflective “Head High Freestyle” (which is sadly a YouTube exclusive for now), Juice WRLD fans are treated to a new posthumous song courtesy of EDM DJ Marshmello, and Ty Dolla $ign caters to the ladies on his new aptly-titled EP Girl Music Vol. 1.
