Flyght Club is the moniker given to a new project from LA-based multi-instrumentalist and producer, Shauvik Sharan. With his first single “So Alone for So Long” 2019, Shauvik introduced the Flyght Club style as a little bit jazzy and funky, a little lofi and containing a lot of emotive, honest lyrics. The sound has only been growing from there.
As more singles were released over the course of 2020, Sharan added to the largely acoustic sound of “So Alone for So Long” by incorporating elements of hip hop and trap. “All for You” is probably the most EDM-styled track in Flyght Club discography so far, with lots of electronic synths but generally it would be classed as well-produced R&B. It has the lyrical romance of the first track but showcases Sharan’s production skills over his guitar work.
“Re-Up” featuring King Cruff is much more hip hop but still with an ambient or lofi twist. Think Matisyahu meets Das Racist. It opens with a quote from Bob Marley and thus the opening of the fun, cartoon video poses Sharan watching Marley on TV as another homage. The video also is meant to show the difference between Sharan’s life in India where he grew up and now in Los Angeles. Rather than being a criticism of either place, the video drives home the point in the song: it’s possible to be happy and live peacefully wherever you are, and the richness of life is rooted in how one feels.
Coming into this year, Flyght Club has deigned to bring a little bit of global music into the mix. For the two most recent tracks, “Those American Eyes” and “Olivia,” the acoustic vibes are back and Sharan really showcases his guitar skills. The video for “Olivia” was posted on YouTube in July but was just recently added to Flyght Club’s Spotify. The vibes here are almost pop in terms of Sharan’s vocals and the production, but it’s more a rock/pop situation, with the production supporting and highlighting Sharan’s extraordinary guitar skills. The video features Sharan playing all the instruments for the song, using different mics, creating sounds with different contorllers and running the beat on his laptop. “Those American Eyes is a cacophony of beautiful sounds composed as an ensemble piece, even bringing a sitar from his native India to add those lovely atmospherics to the track. The video adds to the ensemble feel of the piece, with different artists and Sharan in a recording studio rather than just him in a Tiny Desk format. Though Sharan plays most of the instruments on this track, the chill jam session looks like a great way to perform as well. Seems as though Sharan likes both, so it wouldn’t surprising if he brings in more guest instrumentalists on this project.
With a style this diverse and clearly superior know-how, Sharan as Flyght Club will likely do well in any arena he chooses within music. As it stands, he’s already worked with some major artists like Jason Derulo and Movi3. It will be interesting to see how this lofi prodigy continues to dance between genres and bring chill vibes with a meaning to lots of different audiences.
